OPML editor available today
Dave Winer's new OPML editor is scheduled to be available for download today. Files and support will be here. I've signed up for the newbie list on Yahoo Groups.
I'm not sure how or if I'll incorporate it into my work or play, but it's sure to be much talked of on the net so I want to give it a spin and see what it's all about. I've mentioned here before that I am conflicted about outlines, just generally. I'm both drawn to them and repelled by them. I never did say much about why the idea of outlining makes a part of me bristle. I've thought about it a little more, but I'm still not quite there.
Dave said on Scripting News a while back that his dad, Leon Winer, is working on a book about outlining, or maybe it's specifically about outliners. Maybe the elder Winer will get into the mental roadblocks about outlines. I do know that for me, it's not all about having been made to create outlines in school. Because I love categorizing and classifying things. I'm an index card freak. (Ever see all the index card accessories at Levenger's for Serious Readers? Index card bleachers, index card wallets.)
No... I think it's more to do with a societal expectation -- and sometimes an organizational expectation -- that outlines, things like agendas and presentations and org charts and web site structures must be balanced, that you shouldn't have three things in one category and 5,000 in another. And to that I always think, "Why the hell not?"
Well, I'm late for work. I gotta run, so I probably won't be able to play with the new outliner until later tonight. It's my last short week on my old job in the web department at the National Safety Council. Next week I start a new job in the publications department. I'm excited about it, and a little nervous about the change. That's me; conflicted Amy! Of course it's nothing like the anxiety of going to a whole new workplace. It'll be fine.
